If you want to start a new career in your 40s or 50s, law enforcement is an option. While minimum age requirements are standard for police officers, police departments do not have a maximum age. If you are one of those who set the maximum age limit for the police, you will have to move if you hope to wear the badge.

Although the police department may set a maximum age limit, most do not. Fitness standards for someone signing up in their 40s or 50s are often lower than for applicants in their 20s. However, you still need to meet educational requirements and pass a background check.

The law sets age requirements for police officers by state. Each of the 50 states has its own rules about how young or old a police officer can be, Go Law Enforcement says. It’s 21 in most states, but it’s 18 in Montana, 19 in Florida, and 20 in California. The goal is to hire officers when they are mature enough to make good decisions.

Hiring A Proud New Generation Of City Officers

Although the image associated with rookie cops is usually young, most police departments do not have a maximum age limit. For those who do, physical ability isn’t necessarily the biggest issue. Instead, they want to make sure you can live long enough to retire on a full pension, something easier to do at 30 to 55.

New York State, for example, says state troopers must be under 30 by the deadline to file an application. As the state wants to recruit military veterans, the age limit for military service increases by one year each year. The maximum age limit for police if you are an expert is 37 years.

Federal and many state laws prohibit hiring, promotion, and firing based on age. The chief says that in 1996, Congress amended federal age discrimination laws to allow a maximum age limit for police and firefighters. So states and police departments can set age limits, as long as they are based on valid job performance requirements.

Let’s say the department you want to join doesn’t set the maximum age to become a police officer, that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a job. You must also meet other criteria that the department sets.

In the wake of the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the killing of George Floyd, calls for meaningful police reform are being met with lukewarm responses.

Congress now has only a “framework” for police reform and no decisive action on the George Floyd Police Justice Act of 2021.

Police training — or the lack of it — has been at the center of the conversation about how to better prepare officers to serve and protect the public.

Education And Studies

But is there any way to ensure that only the most qualified police recruits make it to the training academy?

Some believe that a good way to start would be to change the current approach to intelligence and education at police academies.

The somewhat sensational idea that academies and police departments do not allow people with high IQs to join the force sometimes comes up in discussions of police reform. And while this belief is not entirely correct, it is not wrong either.

There is no official or universal bar or cutoff for IQ scores nationwide, but in at least some states, it is legal for police departments to reject applicants who score “very high” on intelligence tests.

Police Officer Recruitment

In 2000, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld the city of New London’s decision to reject Robert Jordan as a candidate for the police force after he scored 33, or the equivalent of an IQ of 125, on the aptitude test.

At the time, the national average IQ score for police officers nationwide was 21 to 22, equivalent to an IQ of 104, which is considered above average. In contrast, Jordan’s IQ of 125 is classified as either above average, high, or high depending on the various IQ scales used.

A federal lawsuit filed against Jordan in New London alleges that the police force only interviewed applicants who scored between 20 and 27, claiming that those with higher scores get bored with police work and leave immediately after training, draining the city of financial resources.

But police work is complex and requires a high level of critical thinking. While the police often need to be quick and decisive in their decision-making, there should also be room for nuance.

Is a force composed almost entirely of people with above average IQ scores worth the complexity of policing?

Police training as it currently exists may not be the best way to ensure that new recruits have – and are able to use – important critical thinking skills.

Therefore, some states, including Illinois, New Jersey and North Dakota, require officers to complete at least two years of college or its equivalent. These states are also in the bottom 11 states with the fewest police killings.

Oregon Joins Nationwide Debate Over Police Education Requirements

The reason behind these requirements is that the brain is not fully developed until the age of twenty, which means that young police recruits may lack important cognitive skills in the early years of their careers.

Research also shows that college-educated officers are more likely to change, especially when it comes to police practices. So having better educated police can be crucial in creating a dynamic and adaptable police force.

The 1967 President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice recommended that police officers nationwide be required to have a bachelor’s degree by 1982. But that recommendation was not implemented.

Highly educated law enforcement officers are 40% less likely to use force in policing and 30% less likely to fire a weapon.
