The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Education is nationally recognized by the National Accreditation Council in Teaching in association with the International Literacy Association (ILA). The program prepares professionals to be leaders in teaching literacy to all students and to support their colleagues in the field. Students in this program will have the opportunity to develop modern conceptual frameworks and effective strategies aimed at developing literacy in classroom and clinical settings.

M.a. In Reading Education

This course provides students with an understanding of the basic principles of developmental reading for grades pre-k-12. Students are highly educated about the learning process. They gain experience in diagnosing and teaching students with learning disabilities. Students learn procedures for managing reading programs in elementary, middle, and high schools. In coursework and reading workshops, students read and interpret current reading research and develop experience in applying findings relevant to their school and classroom literacy practices and learn about their own experiences.

Graduates who complete Reading Specialist are immediately certified as Reading Specialists. They will also support classroom teachers and teacher candidates in their leadership roles in literacy:

The Literacy Practice major is designed for those who wish to pursue advanced literacy skills and become more knowledgeable about instructional strategies aligned with Common Core English/Language Arts standards. Students in this major do not need a teaching certificate, but must be involved in a classroom and/or school district, as well as a group of children to work with.

The Reading and Literacy Education Degree Program, Reading and Literacy Supplemental License (RLAA), and Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialist Certificate (RLLSC) are designed to increase understanding, knowledge, and skills for reading/language learners. art professionals in public or private schools, clinics and community colleges. Our program is also suitable for elementary and secondary teachers who plan to stay in the classroom but want to deepen their theoretical and practical understanding of teaching reading and language arts. Candidates are prepared to teach, mentor, develop curriculum, provide service instruction, and direct learning centers for students from pre-K to community college. A Master’s Degree in Learning and Literacy is often obtained in conjunction with the RLAA and RLLSC.

This program is the only program at SDSU that allows you to earn an RLAA or Pre K-12 RLLSC from the California Teacher Licensure Board in conjunction with an MA in Education.

How Should Reading Be Taught In A Digital Era?

Each of our programs (RLAA, RLLSC, and MA) provides comprehensive, collaborative, and supervised clinical experiences while faculty work directly with K-12 students in the local community. All Teaching and Literacy graduate students have the opportunity to work with SDSU Literacy Center students each spring (subject to COVID-19 restrictions). The degree and/or certification you seek will depend on your educational and professional background and future career plans.

The RLAA provides additional experience and licensure in teaching literacy, preparing you to teach literacy more effectively in the classroom and take on additional roles at the school level in literacy leadership. The RLAA program can be run for 12 consecutive months – from the summer session to the fall and spring semesters.

The RLLSC program is a primary (and higher) teaching certificate. RLLSC prepares teachers to become competent literacy teachers and take leadership roles in professional development, literacy instruction, literacy program evaluation and curriculum. The RLLSC program can be run for 15 consecutive months – starting with the summer session and continuing through the fall, spring and second summer semesters.

The combined MA in Learning and Literacy Education and RLAA/RLLSC program is appropriate for students who have not earned a master’s degree, whose career plans may be outside of California, or who wish to pursue a Ph.D. in the future. The combined MA and RLAA/RLLSC programs can be completed over 15 consecutive months – beginning with a summer session and continuing through a second fall, spring and summer session. A final research project is required for this program.
