The first test will cover 36 candidates for senior non-commissioned officers, the AETC said. Of those sergeants, chief sergeants and sergeants, 26 will be active duty, five will be reservists and five will be from the Air National Guard. To qualify, they must complete an SNCO academy course, either in residence or via distance learning. They were selected through the usual OTS selection committee process held in January and February.

The Officer Training School sets a uniform curriculum for all cadets. Unlike previous cadets, the new officers assigned to graduate from the Officer Training School on March 13 will all undergo the same training.

The second beta test is expected in October. After the tests are over, the Air Force will study the results to see how successful they were.

AETC said the experiment with a shorter training schedule is part of its Continuum of Learning initiative, which aims to combine education, training and experience as Airmen develop, giving them more flexibility to manage their own development, at their own pace. In a statement, AETC said the Air Force may expand the program and experiment with awarding competency points to officer candidates for their prior education, training and experience.

Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Colorado Springs, Colo., the Air Force Academy welcomes approximately 1,200 young men and women annually into its four-year program. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science and Aeronautical Commission. The program is intensive, with a well-balanced curriculum that includes physical and social sciences, humanities and mathematics. In addition, the academy provides cadets with experience in aviation operations through courses such as astrodynamics and aeronautical engineering. Admission to the Air Force Academy is generally through nominations from US senators or representatives, but other methods of admission are available.

AFROTC gives students a unique opportunity to earn a commission while earning a degree. AFROTC offers two- and four-year programs at more than 750 colleges and universities. You apply to the four-year AFROTC program by simply entering aviation studies at the time you register for other freshman courses. You can apply for the two-year AFROTC program if you have at least two years of undergraduate work remaining.

The annual book stipend is $900 per academic year, and the monthly stipend increases depending on the status of the individual student. Freshmen receive $300, sophomores $350, juniors $450 and seniors $500.

High school students interested in a four-year scholarship should apply at the end of their first or beginning of their senior year of high school. College freshmen and sophomores may apply by contacting an aviation studies professor at their college or university.
