Doing well as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a challenging but rewarding profession. Individuals who receive this certification can work at the highest level to create Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy programs. Although the path to becoming a BCBA is not easy in itself, it is simple and doable for most people who put their mind to it.
If you want to help people with autism improve their lives in a clinical setting, this guide on the steps to becoming a BCBA is a great place to start. We hope this is the perfect catalyst for the next step in your career.
Board Certified Behavior Analyst (bcba)
A board-certified behavior analyst, or BCBA, is a health care professional who specializes in child and adult behavior (often related to autism and ABA therapy). Their job is usually to create plans to improve and change behavioral barriers. For them, they usually work with patients with developmental disabilities, especially those with autism spectrum disorders.
On some days the BCBA may supervise the work of the therapists, while on other days they will directly provide the therapy they plan. Similarly, when working in the context of ABA therapy, the BCBA’s job is often to report, review data, and update programs for the clinic in which they work.
To become BCBA certified in ABA therapy, you must meet the requirements of the Board for Certification of Behavior Analysts (BACB – to avoid confusion):
There are many educational and employment options to meet these certification requirements every step of the way, including our Ally University program and many great online resources to help you.

The requirements set out by the BACB do a great job of creating a broad plan, but we’ve taken it a step further. Here’s a linear, step-by-step path through the certification steps to becoming a BCBA.
Whether you’re pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree, this step is important to ensure you get into a qualified graduate school. Fields such as psychology, education, and human studies are just a few options.
Here, BACB inspection and accreditation is more stringent. In most cases, your degree or program should typically include Behavior Analysis, Education, or Psychology. Similarly, any master’s or doctoral programs must be reviewed by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI).
As part of our Ally University program, we have a relationship with Purdue University to provide discounted tuition for this degree.

You can begin qualifying practice hours when you register for the appropriate coursework and review the BACB practice standards with your supervisor. At Ally Pediatric Therapy, we pride ourselves on allowing future BCBAs to earn observation hours to bring them one step closer to certification.
This is a national certification requirement for all BCBA candidates and is standardized by the BACB. You must submit your application to BACB through their authorized gateways to be eligible and apply.
Your application must include official transcripts from accredited degrees or a course syllabus from a non-accredited program. Your supervisor must sign these forms to confirm course sequence and practice hours. If you still need to complete VCS, there is an application fee of $245 plus an additional $100.
Once your application is approved, you must take the BCBA exam through Pearson VUE. The BACB will send their confirmation to the organization and they will in turn contact you to set up your Pearson VUE account and schedule your exam. The exam will cost $125 when you schedule it.
Registered Behavior Technician (rbt)
One of the reasons you go through such a rigorous training and licensing process is to qualify for positions that require BCBA certification.
The BACB provides a list of employment opportunities and is encouraged to seek out local clinics that require an accredited BCBA. After all, giving back to the local community, plus the larger autistic community and ABA, is a win-win. Some clinics, such as Ally Pediatric Therapy, offer relocation packages if you are able to work outside the home.
You must maintain your BCBA certification for a two-year renewal period. This includes continuing education requirements, renewal forms and compliance with the BACB Code of Ethical Compliance for Behavior Analysts. Fortunately, these policies are well-articulated, and quality clinics will work with you to ensure adequate time and resources are available to meet these requirements.
At Ally Pediatric Therapy, we are looking for enthusiastic BCBA licensees to join our team. We have decades of experience helping children with autism and their families, all made possible by our outstanding clinicians. Apply today to make a positive impact as you pursue your dream career. Together we want to change the world for the better.
