One piece of advice I offer agents is to stop thinking like a salesperson and start thinking like a business person. A salesperson often moves from transaction to transaction without a plan. A businessman creates a plan, and executes the plan.
A salesperson often takes the “I’ll just call until I get an appointment” approach. A businessman creates a system and database to find and then forges good habits to make them part of their daily practice.
If you want to be a successful real estate agent, you need to be a great combination of salesperson and businessman.

There are two parts to this business, and the trick is to balance them. First, there is the “behind the scenes” work, such as setting up your CRM, creating ad campaigns or practicing your dialogue for listing presentations or handling objections. Then there’s the “on stage” work, where you actually do money-making activities like pitching FSBOs, knocking on doors, holding real estate conversations at retail stores and showing properties.
The reason I differentiate the two parts is that when we focus on the back end of the business, we don’t make money. Just busy with work. It’s also easy to say, “But I need all these things before I can go out and do money-making activities! I need to update my CRM and I need my PowerPoint to be perfect! It’s a lot of get-ready-to-make-money, but not much actually-make-money. I’m not saying you’re wrong, these things are important, but if there’s ever a time to learn time management, it’s now. Add your Time to work on your business and your business if you want to stay in business .
Qualities Of A Successful Real Estate Agent
Take your daily timer or calendar (or whatever you use) and block off time devoted to working on your business. This frees you up to spend the rest of your time searching and making your phone calls and showing homes. If you limit yourself to having two real estate conversations per day, one with a buyer and one with a seller, even if you’re the worst conversationalist, you’ll start to improve. It will start to become a natural part of your day. You can’t grow a business if you don’t.

If I want to learn to play the piano, I can hire a teacher, buy all the books, get a piano, and even put stickers on the keys to say which notes are the keys. I can even sit at the piano and polish it so it’s shiny and beautiful. I can also put my fingers on the keys, but until I actually start playing and practicing, I won’t play a song.
When I went to practice, I would sound like my cat running across the keyboard. I would make a lot of mistakes, and my neighbors might call the police with a noise complaint. However, the more I practice, the better I get.
