The unemployment rate for military spouses is three times higher than the national average. According to the Navy’s federal survey, 13% of military spouses are unemployed, and 43% of military spouses are unemployed. In unemployment and underemployment, military spouses cited special challenges related to resettlement, childcare responsibilities, and the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before my husband moved to Iraq for the second time, my husband and I went through a very difficult time in our relationship, and we had fights, in fact, all the time. We fought stupid things, things that didn’t matter, but for some reason, neither of us was willing to give anything up. I remember mentioning it to another couple in passing, and I was surprised that this set seemed more difficult than his first round. I felt like I was out of my mind and worried about going viral at this point.
He just laughed and said, “Let me give you some advice, my dear, if you want to marry a Marine, and stay that way, you have to know that you cannot make important life decisions from six weeks ahead of you. This is the best advice I’ve ever received, and it’s one of the main reasons my husband and I are (happy) together. This made me think of many other pearls of wisdom that are floating out in the locality of our spouses, waiting to be discovered. So we took the opportunity to talk to a few wives, and chose their best thoughts instead of their best advice.

When it comes to advice for loving a service person, the wife almost agreed that raising yourself and being busy is the key. Navy wife Megan Lee advises, “Find something you like, or something to keep you busy while you’re posting.”
